Entanglement has switched over to a dressing room format for now, so applications aren't needed for the time being.

FANDOM CHARACTER APPLICATION:

ORIGINAL CHARACTER APPLICATION:

Whichever application you're posting, please put the character's name, if they're an OC, and their fandom (if any) in the subject line.

Note again that you are allowed to use musebox posts and posts on [livejournal.com profile] testrun_box for your sample. In that case, your total amount of tags written will be added up, so the initial post can be shorter than normal for a sample. You're still required to use a prose format and set the sample in the game universe though.

Physical Appearance:

Talbot stands about five-eleven, with close-cropped black hair, brown eyes, and tannish skin.

When he's not engaged in an investigation or raid, he wears the standard X-Com duty uniform, which consists of the following elements:

  • A black hat modeled on those used by the Russian cavalry, with the X-Com insignia on the front
  • A maroon tunic with grey pauldrons
  • Black elbow-length gloves with gold bands at the wrists
  • Maroon-and-grey trousers
  • Grey sash
  • Duty belt with X-Com insignia buckle
  • Black knee-length boots with gold bands about two inches below the knee

When engaged in an investigation or raid, he wears MarSec power armor. MarSec armor, despite its bulky appearance, is fairly lightweight; while it affords less protection against weapons fire than the heavier Megapol Armor, it does have two advantages over said Megapol Armor:

One, it is capable of limited flight (see Abilities and Skills below).
Two, it affords superior protection against exposure to toxic gases.

Additionally, being a skilled marksman, Lieutenant Talbot has a preference for weapons with high accuracy and long range (such as the LSR-15 laser rifle, or the Alien Devastator Cannon).

Personality:

Talbot is one of the best soldiers X-Com has, having survived a good three years of combat against the latest Alien menace to threaten Earth - or, more specifically, the great domed city known as Mega-Primus. His family has a long history of public service, most of which involved emergency services of some kind, though both his father and grandfather fought alongside X-Com in the First and Second Alien Wars respectively.

In the late 21st century, though, such public services are now provided by private contractors. The best known of these are Megapol (a privatized - and highly efficient - police force) and the Mars Security Force, also known as MarSec.

Talbot joined the Mega-Primus division of MarSec in late 2082 and made a name for himself as one of MarSec's most skilled security operatives, most notably in "Operation Skystriker" - a joint Megapol-MarSec operation targeting a criminal network involved in Elerium piracy.

When the Third Alien War began in 2084,the commander of MarSec Mega-Primus was contacted by X-Com recruiting agents, seeking skilled operatives for the defense of Mega-Primus against alien incursion.

Talbot was one of the operatives recommended to the recruiters - and in point of fact, he was one of the few MarSec operatives to prove suitable for service with X-Com. However, despite his other qualifications, he's not exactly the most diplomatic of X-Com's combat division.

["With all due respect, that has to be the most half-assed description of me I've ever seen!"]

He doesn't handle indecisiveness very well, nor does he trust those who ally themselves with forces generally considered hostile. Indeed, he has a particular disdain for those who ally themselves with the Alien menace, as such alliances have almost led to disaster in the past.

["First it's 'we've got a possible Eek infestation at the sewage treatment plant, let's send Alpha Team out to investigate'. Then it's 'Oh wait, Lifetree says they have the situation under control'. Now they say Lifetree's been taken over by the Eeks. Five'll get you ten, everything's gonna be peachy with Lifetree about five seconds after we're in the transports - I wish they'd make up their bloody minds. Are we gonna raid Lifetree or not?! . . . We are? You're absolutely sure? No last-minute changes of heart? . . . Then what in hell are we waiting for? Time to give Lifetree a wake-up call, since it seems they've forgotten what happened the last time people allied with Eeks. Nearly lost us the First Alien War, that did - if X-Com hadn't taken out the Eeks' Cydonia base, Earth would've been pillaged by the Eeks long since."]

It should also be noted that his use of unorthodox tactics has resulted in several surprise victories for X-Com's forces, and some people in X-Com have been considering him for promotion; however, his . . . enthusiasm for his job will likely mean that he will reject any proffered promotions.

["Goddamn right I don't want another promotion. Hell, I wish they'd just left me a Sergeant. I get promoted again, I'm gonna wind up a desk jockey. Not my speed at all - I'd rather be on the front lines, blowing the Eeks across four time zones. And those guys who think I'm some kind of tactical genius? The name's Guido Talbot, not Hannibal Smith! . . . Look, I'm a soldier. A grunt with a fancy gun and flying armor, and it's my job to make sure the Eeks don't wreck Mega-Primus. So,if I find a tactic that works, I use it - and I don't give a single Brainsucker turd whether it's orthodox or not."]

(Yeah, I kinda broke the fourth wall there orz. Meant it to give an example of how he'd react to such comments ICly.)

Abilities and Skills:

Limited Flight - Lieutenant Talbot is equipped with a full set of Marsec Power Armor. This armor's systems are powered by an Elerium microfusion generator, and allows it to generate an antigravity field that can be switched on and off at will. However, the field isn't very powerful, so he can't go zooming about like Superman - think of it as more like hovering, with movement speed roughly equivalent to a fast jog.

Marksman - Talbot's skilled at taking out enemy forces from long range; his preferred weapon is the LSR-15, a high-accuracy laser rifle with integrated telescopic sights.

"You're sure about this, Colonel? That's their main shipbuilding facility?" Talbot asked, looking at the map before him.

Colonel Sanchez nodded. "Looks like it, Lieutenant - though the boffins say that the ships aren't so much built as grown. Some weird organic tech or other, the like of which X-Com's never encountered until this latest incursion. It's completely unlike anything from the First or Second Alien Wars."

Talbot nodded, bringing up a schematic that the probes had put together during their recon sweeps through the Alien Dimension. "Well, it looks like they've got transport arrays on the main floors - here, here, and here. We'll need to take them out to keep them from bringing in backup - and with those down, we should be able to keep the exits clear of Eek troops."

The Lieutenant rotated the schematic, pointing out a few other areas of interest. "These things here, these . . . trunks, they look to be load-bearing. A vortex mine on each should destabilize the structure enough to bring it crashing down on their lumpy heads, though I'd want to seed more vortex mines and some explosive charges throughout the genesis chamber here as backup - if the mined supports don't bring the building down, we can sure wreck their shipbuilding that way too. Either way, I'd set the mines and HE for remote detonation - that way, we can blow them once the teams are in the transports and on their way back."

Colonel Sanchez nodded. "Pick your teams, Lieutenant. I want that factory gone for good!"

Talbot grinned. "You know me, sir - I'll get the job done!"

1) Sorry about that. I'll get that done and posted sometime tomorrow. (I was actually thinking of appending something about his prejudices and attitude during/after missions while I was at work today.)

2) The sample's based more on one of the Alien Dimension missions from Apocalypse (specifically, the one where you have to destroy the Organic Factory, which serves as the aliens' main shipbuilding facility - though such missions might also be undertaken against the Fey'lians).

(And on a completely unrelated note, I chuckled when I saw that the cook was a Soviet Giant Squid from Red Alert 2.)

ADDENDUM

Extract from X-Com Personnel File #484.368.252.689.266 (Talbot, Guido, Lt), dated 11/04/2085:

. . . Lieutenant Talbot stated that he has a marked dislike of the latest batch of recruits - all volunteers from the Mutant Alliance, a political organization comprised mainly of human-Sectoid hybrids. His basis for such dislike seems to stem from family experiences during the First Alien War, particularly counterterrorist operations against Sectoid/Cyberdisk attacks on civilian populations - many of which were severely hampered by the highly-developed psionic abilities of the Sectoid race, according to the surviving records from the aforementioned conflict.

Though Commander Stark believes the recruits from the Mutant Alliance to be a valuable addition to our ranks despite their physical frailty, the Lieutenant fears that they might turn their greatest asset - namely, their psionic abilities - against the members of this organization, either intentionally or due to Alien influence.

Sadly, Lieutenant Talbot is not an isolated case within the ranks of X-Com, as many members of both the combat and R&D staff have expressed similar opinions.

We shall make every effort to ensure that such prejudices do not impinge too heavily upon X-Com operations, but it will be very difficult to overcome such well-justified fears.

Sample v2.0:

"This is the audio log of Lieutenant Guido Talbot, late of the Mars Security Force and currently assigned to the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit. Time and date: approximately June 11th 2091, seventeen hundred hours local time.

"This place, this . . . Hub, they call it, is . . . Well, I'm not sure exactly what to make of it. It's a hodgepodge of ships and modules, all bolted together with no real plan. It's easy to get lost here - very easy.

"I'm kind'a wary of some of the inhabitants, though - I think there's a Sectoid colony in one of the lower modules, truth be told, and I really don't trust those little grey bastards. Cost X-Com a lot of good men back in the First Alien War, what with their mindbending and all.

"And then there's the head cook. Sure, she's one hell of a cook - she's done stuff with the rations here that I don't think even the best-trained human chef could even hope to match - but she's a giant squid! She's damn good at her job, and she can be a real sweetheart too, but . . . it feels kind of weird seeing a giant squid cooking your food."

Talbot shook his head. "On another note, we'd heard that the Fey'lians - or possibly some of their allies, we're not sure which yet - were going to be making a move soon. Something about setting up a base in what we've been calling the Alien Dimension, though the people here call it something else. Don't know where exactly, but I thought it'd be best to make note of it. Forewarned is forearmed, after all- and if I find out where this action's supposed to be taking place, it might be worth sending a couple of Dimension Probes out that way to get a good look around. Good intel is in short supply these days, it seems.

"I don't know if the boffins back home have finished their research into replicating the Dimension Gate tech that the Mega-Primus Eeks are using - but they have, we might be able to use that to our advantage. A fleet of Retaliators or Annihilators would be a great help in this war - hell, I'd bet that even a handful of Avengers retrofitted for interdimensional travel would be useful, and certainly a lot better than some of the stuff we do have."

He leaned back in his chair rubbing his temples. "That's pretty much all I have to report this time around. I'll try to make sure that a copy of this log gets back to Malachite Base in time to be of use.

"End entry."

('Owzat?)
