She spent most of her youth in an orphanage, due to having killed her own parent's at the age of 3, where she was tormented by other children for her horns. The orphanages' staff even ridiculed her, avoid contact with her because she “wasn't human”. Making matters worse, Lucy found a puppy during her stay and told the one girl she considered a friend about it. This led to the girl telling the boys who made fun of her about the dog, the boys then proceeded to kill the animal. This caused Lucy to release her Vectors for the first time killing the boys. From that moment forward,Lucy developed an intense dislike of human beings and saw nothing wrong with killing them if the need arose. The exception to this came in the form of a boy named Kouta, who was the only person who really formed a real bond with Lucy, playing with her for a few days before leaving to go home, but not before saying he was going to visit his cousin at a local festival. Kouta lied that his cousin was male, in an effort to keep Lucy from becoming sad, this little lie had horrible consequences as Lucy ended up seeing Kouta at the festival and, enraged at seeing Kouta with another girl, began killing anyone within reach of her Vectors. In this we see, that Lucy has serious problems dealing with anger or disappointment and lashes out at others to the face of such emotions, the differences being, that unlike normal people, Lucy is capable of causing great loss of life with her fits. This moment also sealed Lucy's hatred of human beings, she began seeing them as untrustworthy and two faced and not accepting of her kind. She resolved to replace human beings with her own kind via her powers as a way of dealing with this “problem”. The only person Lucy ever felt bad for hurting was Kouta, to whom she promised she would apologize to someday for the pain she caused him.
As an adult, Lucy became able to mildly control herself, no longer lashing out at random human beings and killing only when her life was actually in danger. She still lacks remorse for her violent pass, with the obvious exception of Kohta, with whom she finally apologizes to after living with him for a period of time. Her relationship with Kouta seems to be the one thing that keeps her grounded, as thoughts of hurting him again are often enough for her to call off an attack or revert to her Nyu personality. All of this combined seemed to point to Lucy being in love with Kouta but her violent past and Diclonius nature prevent the two from really being together.
It is very notable, that after escaping from confinement at the Diclonious research facility, Lucy hit her head and developed a secondary more innocent personality, that Kohta named Nyu, as that was the only sound she was able to make after he found her. Nyu is a simple person, speaking little English and having no idea about how the world around her works. She tends to make fast friends with people around her and is generally liked by everyone around her. Nyu is also very affectionate, often in inappropriate circumstances such as asking Kohta to cuddle with her after he found her alone in the wood, after she who run away from home in her Lucy personality and had reverted to Nyu with out having a clue where she is. She also groped Kohta's cousin Yuka's breasts on random occasions, though no real reason was given for the act. Finally, switching between her Nyu and Lucy personalities often involves one of two circumstances, either falling on her head somehow or experiencing a deep trauma such as seeing one of her friends under attack.
