Alia was born with Ancestral Memory, a "preborn". She was awakened to consciousness in her mother's womb due to her mother's use of a spice derivative. She was flooded with their memories and had to constantly battle for room for her own personality to develop. In addition she lives with the constant fear of Bene Gesserit judgement. The BG call preborn children "abominations" and usually execute them. The knowledge of this has shaped her entire life. making her irrationally paranoid. She's described herself as living perpetually above an abyss.
Her ancestral memory has meant that she is constantly hearing their voices criticizing her, asking for audience. In her private moments she talks to them out loud giving her the appearance of schizophrenia. This extends as far as allowing her to physically "interact" with them. Alia was and is egotistical, hotheaded and prone to rapid mood swings. Her attitude toward a person can change with a word, from adoring love to burning hatred. Alia desperately wants to see the future and will commit any act to achieve it. She tends to seek temporary comfort in sex but has a hard time committing to permanent relationships because she fears people seeing her abomination. It may be that she uses her bed partners as substitutes for the comfort and support her brother used to give her. Probably the strongest ancestral memory/personality she has is that of her maternal grandfather, the Baron Harkonnen. In life, the Baron was a rapaciously evil plotter and sexual predator who tried to murder her family. With increasing regularity she's been surrendering control to him, causing the more evil aspects (that is to say, all of them) of the Baron's personality to shine through in her.
